July 14 is also Bastille Day. I was shocked to discover, when I visited, that the key to the Bastille is at Mount Vernon, having been presented to President George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette.

The ceiling above the altar at Saint Rita’s Church in Alexandria is full of stars. The whole church was very beautiful, but since I was there for a funeral it didn’t seem right to pop my camera out and say, excuse me but I need some pictures. I wish I could do the color in the windows justice.

My mother was confirmed in this church in 1947. She enjoyed the same windows many years ago.
I’m finally closing in on my short story. Nearly 1000 words today. Since the whole thing is supposed to be less than 8000 that’s pretty significant. It might be titled Why Did My Family Always Laugh About Chickens. Or it might not. When I finish, I will offer it to the anthology call that inspired it. A scary moment since they might say no…
The header is three days of work on my inkle loom. The yellow green was practice for making shoelaces. It’s too fat!
